Calgary to Winnipeg: What a 1,330 km Prairie Move Really Looks Like

By Bronwyn Leclair, personal essayist and prairie life columnist

A Calgary to Winnipeg move covers roughly 1,330 km on Trans-Canada Highway 1 through Medicine Hat, Swift Current, Regina and Brandon. Plan two comfortable driving days, or one 14-hour push. A one-way rental truck runs about $2,400 CAD to $4,200 all in. A full-service crew runs $5,500 to $11,000 for a three-bedroom house.

I did this move in February, which I would call a decision rather than a mistake. We had six weeks, one cat, a 1970s dining set my grandmother refinished by hand, and a lease we could not break until month end.

How Far Is Calgary to Winnipeg, and How Long Does the Drive Take?

The road distance is about 1,330 km door to door, give or take 20 km depending on your start and end points. Google says 13 hours and 30 minutes. Google is describing a car.

In a loaded 26-foot rental truck, in winter, the real number was closer to 16 hours of wheel time. Loaded trucks slow on the grades near Medicine Hat and slow again where wind crosses the open sections west of Moose Jaw. We stopped often, because a driver’s shoulders seize after three hours of correcting for crosswind.

The segments, west to east:

  • Calgary to Medicine Hat: 295 km
  • Medicine Hat to Swift Current: 220 km
  • Swift Current to Regina: 245 km
  • Regina to Brandon: 360 km
  • Brandon to Winnipeg: 215 km

Three provinces, one highway, and almost no elevation change after the first hour.

A Two-Day Drive Plan With Overnight Stops

This is the plan we used, and the one I would use again.

  1. Load the truck the day before. Do not load and drive on the same day. We finished at 7 p.m. and slept in the empty condo on an air mattress. That single decision saved the trip.
  2. Leave Calgary by 7:30 a.m. You want daylight for the Alberta leg, especially in winter.
  3. Fuel and eat in Medicine Hat, 295 km in. Diesel is easy to find on the Highway 1 service roads, and this is the last stop before Saskatchewan.
  4. Push to Swift Current or Regina for the night. Swift Current sits at 515 km, Regina at 760 km. We chose Regina to shorten day two. Book ahead, because Regina highway hotels fill with work crews midweek.
  5. Walk the truck before bed. Check load straps, the rear door seal and tire pressure. Cold air drops pressure overnight.
  6. Leave Regina by 8 a.m. The remaining 575 km is the flattest and windiest part of the route.
  7. Stop in Brandon, 360 km on. Brandon is the last full-service town before Winnipeg, and a sensible place to reconfirm keys or parking permission.
  8. Arrive mid-afternoon. Unloading in the dark, in a back lane, in February, is how people get hurt.

What Does a Calgary to Winnipeg Move Cost in CAD?

Three approaches, three very different prices. The ranges below come from quotes I collected in 2024 for a three-bedroom household of roughly 4,000 kg. Treat them as ranges, not averages.

OptionCost range (CAD)Days door to doorPhysical effortRisk to your goods
Drive it yourself, one-way rental truck$2,400 to $4,2002 to 3Very high. You load, drive and unload.Highest. Your packing, your straps, your liability.
Hire a full-service crew$5,500 to $11,0003 to 7Low. You supervise and sign.Lowest, if you buy replacement-value protection.
Ship by shared load$3,000 to $6,5007 to 14Medium. You often pack yourself.Medium. More handling, wider delivery window.

The rental truck figure includes the one-way fee, roughly 350 to 450 litres of fuel, two hotel nights, the damage waiver and a dolly. It excludes the friends you will owe dinner for life.

Shared load, also called consolidated freight, means your goods ride with other households going the same direction. Price drops, and certainty drops with it. You get a delivery window of several days, not an appointment.

If you want a firm date rather than a window, that is the case for a dedicated crew. Companies that run the Alberta to Manitoba corridor regularly, such as Calgary to Winnipeg movers, price the route as a known lane rather than a one-off, and they already know which Winnipeg neighbourhoods a 53-foot trailer cannot enter. That local knowledge is worth more than a small discount.

Prairie Weather: Why a February Move Is a Different Animal

A July move on Highway 1 is a long, dull, pleasant drive. A February move is a weather event you are inside of. Three things I underestimated:

Ground blizzards. The sky can be clear blue while road visibility drops to nothing. Loose snow lifts off open fields and crosses the highway in ribbons, mostly between Moose Jaw and Brandon. Twice we slowed to 40 km/h.

Black ice on overpasses. Bridge decks freeze first. In a loaded truck, you feel the back end float before you see anything.

Cold that changes your gear. At minus 30, packing tape loses grip, shrink wrap goes brittle and phone batteries die in a pocket.

Check conditions the morning you leave, not the night before. Alberta 511 and Manitoba 511 publish live road conditions and closures, and Manitoba’s service sits at manitoba511.ca. Highway 1 does close during prairie storms, and there is no second route.

The Mountain to Central Time Zone Change

Winnipeg is one hour ahead of Calgary all year. Alberta keeps Mountain Time with daylight saving, Manitoba keeps Central Time with daylight saving. Saskatchewan sits between them on Central Standard Time year-round and never changes clocks, so the province matches Winnipeg in winter and Calgary in summer.

That hour matters more than it sounds. A crew booked for 9 a.m. in Winnipeg arrives at 8 a.m. Calgary time. Confirm which zone the dispatcher used for your delivery window. Ours was quoted in Central. I assumed Mountain. We waited in an empty house an hour longer than necessary, which is trivial, unless the heat is not on yet.

Winnipeg Specifics: Old Houses, Back Lanes and Parking Bans

Winnipeg housing is older and cheaper than Calgary housing, and the second fact follows from the first. Character homes in Wolseley, West Broadway and the North End were built between 1900 and 1930. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation publishes current market data for both cities.

What the listing photos hide:

  • Narrow staircases with tight turns. Our sofa never made the turn to the second floor. The sofa went through a window on a strap.
  • Doorways under 30 inches. Measure the fridge, mattress and largest bookcase before the truck leaves Calgary.
  • Back lane access. Many Winnipeg houses load from the lane, not the street. Lanes are narrow, often unpaved, and rutted ice in winter. A 53-foot trailer will not enter one, which means a shuttle and a shuttle fee.
  • Snow route parking bans. The City of Winnipeg declares residential and snow route parking bans during clearing operations. A truck parked on a snow route during a ban is ticketed and towed. Check the city’s snow clearing page on unload morning.

What Survived the Trip and What Did Not

Survived: every dish, because dishes packed vertically in a barrel do not break. The dining set, blanket-wrapped and strapped flat. The cat, furious but fine.

Did not survive: a flat-pack bookcase assembled once and never meant to move again. Two houseplants that froze near Virden. A television left in its thin retail box, which cracked when the load shifted.

The pattern is simple. Solid wood travels. Particleboard does not. Anything alive or fragile rides in the heated car with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours is the drive from Calgary to Winnipeg?

About 13.5 hours in a car with minimal stops, covering roughly 1,330 km on Trans-Canada Highway 1. In a loaded rental truck, plan 16 hours behind the wheel. Most households split the trip over two days, with an overnight in Swift Current or Regina.

What is the cheapest way to move from Calgary to Winnipeg?

Driving a one-way rental truck is cheapest, typically $2,400 to $4,200 CAD including fuel, hotels and the damage waiver. Shared load shipping sits in the middle at $3,000 to $6,500. The cheapest option costs the most in labour and carries the most risk to your goods.

Is it safe to move across the prairies in winter?

Yes, with planning. The risks are ground blizzards, black ice on overpasses and highway closures during storms. Check Alberta 511 and Manitoba 511 the morning you leave, build a spare day into the schedule, and never load houseplants or records into an unheated trailer.

How far in advance should I book movers for Manitoba?

Book six to eight weeks ahead for a summer move, three to four weeks for a winter move. May through August is peak season across Canada, and month-end dates go first. Winter dates are easier to get and often 10 to 20 percent cheaper.

Will a moving truck fit in a Winnipeg back lane?

Usually not. Full-size 53-foot trailers cannot enter most residential lanes, and winter ruts stop smaller trucks too. Ask your mover whether a shuttle is required, and get the shuttle fee in writing before moving day rather than on your driveway.
